4 Questions to Ask Before Adding to Your Home

Are you planning an addition to your home? Whether you’re thinking of adding an entire room or just wanting to build the perfect deck, there are some considerations you should make in the early stages of the planning process. We have four questions you need to ask yourself before you get started in the renovation process:

What is your budget?

This should be the first question you ask because it will help you create guidelines for the rest of your project. You’ll want to consider the financial backing that you’ll be able to get against what you have saved for the project. You may be able to consider a home improvement loan based on the bank’s confidence in your current financial situation. Play with the numbers – many contractors, Kliethermes included, provide free consultations for big projects.

How would you design your home if you could start from scratch?

If you could have built your house yourself, what would you have done? Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up on existing fixtures and forget about what your dream will look like once it’s realized. If you start from scratch, you can easily define your priorities for the project, as well as get creative and think about your home in a new light.

Will the addition be an asset if you ever decide to sell?

Very few homeowners start a large addition project with the idea that they’ll be selling their home soon. We know that life happens and you may need to sell your house, with your dream addition, down the road. Make sure that your addition won’t hinder the selling process but rather boost the chances that someone else will love your home as much as you do. Your home should be your oasis, but you may also want to consider whether or not someone else could turn it to their oasis after you’re gone.

How will your addition add to the rest of your home?

Your addition should not only be attractive but economical and useful as well. A designer can help you plan out your room to make sure it will not only work well with the inside of your home but also compliment your house from the outside as well. Think about where all your utilities and obstacles may be so that you don’t run into an issue halfway through the build. We recommend following the old adage “Measure twice, cut once.” Double and triple check all your plans before the contractor swings the sledgehammer – you won’t regret it!
